Dale Lex Gillette, 88, of Belle Fourche died Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the Belle Estate.
He was born June 23, 1931 in Belle Fourche to Orval and Ada Gillette. He attended Belle Fourche Schools graduating in 1949. During his high school years, he worked nights at the sugar beet factory and also became and Eagle Scout. He then entered the Marine Corps, serving during the Korean Conflict.
He married his high school sweetheart Virginia Hodge October 7, 1951 in San Diego, CA where they resided until his discharge. They returned to Belle Fourche where they have lived since. He went into business with his father starting Gillette and Son Construction until his father retired in 1955. He continued the business until 1986. He then went to work for his son at Gillette Fence.
He was a member of the Belle Fourche Fire Department for 27 years, serving as chief for 10 years. He was also a member of Spearfish Canyon Fire Department. Dale served on the Belle Fourche City Council for 7 years and on the Belle Fourche Hospital Board for many years. He was a member of the Lions Club for over 50 years and served a term as district governor for a five- state region. In 2012 Dale and Virginia were honored as parade marshals for the Black Hills Roundup.
He enjoyed helping anyone with a construction project whether he knew them or not, saying I have the tools, when do we start? He loved the family cabin in Spearfish canyon where he spent most weekends.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Virginia; his daughter, Vicki Ackerman and son, Curt (Ellie) Gillette all of Belle Fourche; his foreign exchange student son, Juan Casiraghi of Argentina; grandchildren, Brandon (Amber) Ackerman, Kristi (Mike) Ritchie, Callie (Kevin) Jasper, Austin (Stef) Gillette and Lindsey Gillette; great grandchildren, Bailee, Bryce, Harper, Haydon, Hudson, Cameron, Kimber, Davian and Ansley; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ralph; in-laws, Ruth and Leonard Hodge and son-in-law, Don Ackerman.
A visitation and sharing of memories will be held Monday, August 19 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.
A Ceremonial Tribute will be held Tuesday, August 20 at 11:00 AM at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Belle Fourche. Burial will follow at 2:30 PM at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
The family suggests memorials to the Belle Fourche Fire Department.
